Warrior of the Sea

Scot Reid has asked us to mention the upcoming Warrior of the Sea with the press release below....

"The 2nd annual Warrior of the Sea Swim from Rosses Point to Strandhill promises to be a truly spectacular affair.
With top swimmers from around the country registered to compete for the Michael Quirk designed perpetual Warrior of the Sea trophy, this years event, which takes place at 7:15am on Saturday 25th June is set to be the most competitive yet.

Starting at Rosses Point from the Sligo Yacht Club slipway, competitors have to navigate themselves across the notoriously fast moving channel between the mainland and Coney Island. Once safely across, swimmers exit the water briefly to cross over the rock causeway of Blackrock Lighthouse, reentering the water to begin the main section of the race. Swimmers then round Coney Island and McGuins Island, past the end of the runway and across Sligo Bay toward Strandhill beach.

Competitors will them have to make their way through the crashing waves at Strandhill Beach to reach the finish line located in front of the car park. A total distance of 6km. The fastest time for the swim is 1 hour 30 minutes but with the high standard of entrant this year, that record is surely going to be broken.

Once again we are indebted to the generosity of the Sligo Civil Defence and Sligo Kayak club who are providing safety support for the event.

Registration for the event can be gained through the website www.wots.biz and all online entries close on the 5th June 2011.

This years event is kindly sponsored by Tindal Wine Merchants, The Strand Bar, Voya and Outerpoint Surf Shop."
