Moragh Time Trial

Registration at calry church at 6.15pm and cycle out to the start of the timetrial (6-7miles) or alternatively drive out the old calry rd past calry church etc. (Registration at Calry church only). No registration after 6.45pm. The time trial starts at the junction of the old calry rd where it meets the main Sligo to Manorhamilton Rd. Parking is only available on the hard shoulder of the main rd.

A few points for the remaining timetrials.

  • There have been a few complaints about dangerous riding. Particularly at the junction of the golf club. Riders must obey the rules of the road at all times. Riders must not cross onto the wrong side of the road or its instant DQ.

  • At the start of the timetrial please accumulate inside the hard shoulder and not out in the middle of the road.

  • When riders are approaching the turnarounds please signal to the cars behind when approaching the turn. Please make sure the it is safe to turn before turning.

  • Some riders feel its ok to be out in the middle of the road for the time trial. Please ride on the yellow broken line just outside the hard shoulder and when passing another rider please make them aware that you are approaching by calling outside.

  • When the timetrial is finished please don't circle back to ask the timekeeper what time you achieved. The results will be posted ASAP after the event on our website and whatsoninsligo.ie.

  • Similarly find out your start time before the timetrial. Don't be approaching the timekeeper and starter looking for your start time. They have a job to do and this distracts them leading to mistakes

  • Please avoid passing the start line. Either use the footpath or warm up on a turbo trainer. There are instances when riders are starting and other riders are passing as they start. Bad etiquette

Weekend Race Roundup

Sligo Triathlon Club had a very successful weekend at various events. The length of this post gives an idea of how many racers the club was able to field in the various events (including international!) over the two days. It looks good for the future of our club to see so many new members successfully complete the race distances.

The weekend kicked off with Mary Hurley completing her first triathlon in Westport (report to follow).

The same day saw a group of four travel to Slane, thanks to Wayne for the following race report…
“Saturday the 29th of May saw five Sligo Triathlon Club members make the journey to Slane Castle, a location more famous for live bands than it is for triathlon.
The AliveOutside run race was the standard sprint distance triathlon of 750m, swim 20k cycle and 5k run.
The swim was in a wave format with 20 minute intervals between each wave. This meant that the faster swimmers going in the fifth and sixth waves had to wait for over an hour and a half before they begun their race. However once they got their chance all members swam well down the Boyne river course exiting the water on the heels of the leaders. A quick scramble up the river bank was followed by a steep 500m run up a hill to the front of the castle grounds to transition.
The bike section was a two lap course on open roads with challenging hilly drags, plenty of dangerous corners and one steep decent which wasnt for the faint hearted. After the second lap riders were directed back into the beautiful grounds of Slane castle. After the dismount there was another 500 meter bare foot run back to transition where the competitors swapped their bikes for their runners and set off on the 5k forest trail run. Competitors were happy with this section of the race and didn’t seem to mind the initial climb up the famous Slane hill. The race finished again by transition adjacent to the castle and was won by Colin Bolger from Pulse Triathlon Club followed by his two teammates in what is proving to be a very strong and experienced Club. The Sligo contingent had mixed fortunes and were led home by Sean Flannery(1.18) with a strong run section to bring him home ahead of Mark Capilitan(1.19), Jason McMorrow(1.24) and Tommy Sheridan(1.29). Wayne McNulty DNF. This gave Sean third in his age category in what was a very competitive event.” –full results are available here.

Congrats to Stewart Mc Kenna who completed his first Half Ironman Event in Vienna at the weekend. Stewart did a fantastic time of 4 hours 49 mins.

On the Sunday the inaugural Lough Allen/Iron Mountain Triathlon took place in Drumshanbo, with the field containing a large number of competitors sporting the new all black club strip. This was a very well organised event and everyone who took part clearly enjoyed it. Club members in both events were placed on the winning podium. There were 2 distances with Mark Capilitan (see photo) winning the Sprint in a time of 1:01:16 -and completing his second race of the weekend!, closely followed by Ronan Mcnamara at 1:02:46. Conal Sexton and Roy Kelly both completed their first triathlon in times of 1:08:39 and 1:09:01 (11th and 13th overall). The ladies veteran prize was taken by Una Mannion in a time of 1:16:43, with Kathy Mc Morrow rounding up a very successful event for the club in a time of 1:24:27.In the longer Olympic distance race the club managed to gain the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th placings in the Mens event (Brian Sexton 2:00:07, Colm Casey 2:00:20, Niall Melvin 2:01:29 and Eamonn Mc Andrew 2:03:59 respectively), with Eamonn competing in his first ever triathlon!
The club was also well represented in the ladies section with Cecilia Mc Guiness taking third in a time of 2:18:05, closely followed in fourth by Caoimhe Ni Mhurchu (2:19:20). Leo Donlon, David Downes and Joe Waters rounded up the Sligo contingents placings (17th at 2:14:11, 29th at 2:22:00 and 34th at 2:29:32 respectively). A full race report can be found by following this link.

The club was also represented in the Liam Ball triathlon in Derry by Czarke Kelly and Alan Waters completing the event in 1:21:59 and 1:32:04 respectively. More details can be found on the northwest tri club website –note: it’s not working at the time of this post (Mon morning).

Congrats to Padraig Hanly who came second in the Lough Sheelin lake swim on Sunday in Cavan. Padraig took part in the 1km event.

Well done to all who took part in the various races -the club website will shortly include a list of club members race reports from the various events; so as we can recommend races for members interested in travelling.

–the next race action is tomorrow with the bike time trial on Moragh Hill –if you plan to race; meet at Calry Church for 6:15pm and we will cycle to it from there.

Club Water Safety

We've had complaints in relation to some of the club swimmers over the past two weeks so here are some club guidelines on swimming again.

Our sea training base is Rosses Point, safe as beaches go, but not without some dangers as with any body of water.

Never swim alone, under any circumstances, even on a busy beach. Unless it's lifeguarded it's very unlikely that anyone is watching you or would notice if you did get into difficulty.

Always swim parellel and close to the shore. If you or another member of the group get into difficulty it's easy to get to shore.

Chest deep water is more than adeqaute to swim in, there's no need to be in 20ft of water.

Wear a brightly coloured swim hat, swimmers are difficult to see by watercraft. This is especially important with Rosses Point becoming more popular with kitesurfers who move very quickly in shallow water. The Yacht Club also use the cove for training and races, their marker bouys should never be used by club members for training routes.

Do not swim to the left of the swimming pool, there is a very strong and dangerous current here, a club member ignored the council signs in place this week and was caught in the channel and almost needed to be rescued but got out safely. A rescue of club members did take place in the same channel last year. There is no need to swim anywhere near the pool, there is almost 1.5km to swim in to the right of the pool.

Let someone at home know where you're swimming and when you expect to return, this is in case your group gets into trouble so that someone knows to check on you.

It varies from person to person but don't swim immediately after eating as it may lead to cramp.

Council lifeguards will be on weekend/bank holiday duty (11am-7pm) in June and provide a 7 day service in July and August.

Be aware of conditions and tide, if in doubt ask the lifeguards. Tide tables are available from all watersports shops and are a must for open water swimming.

Cycle touring group

For anyone who wants to take the bike training at a slower pace than the club spins, a cycle touring group is meeting at the Teeling Centre, Collooney @ 7:30pm on Thursdays. Thanks go to Martha Van der Mulen for organizing this training. The spin will take a more scenic route than the main evening training.

Don't forget that the local touring club (Innisfree Wheelers) run a number of early morning spins which may suit members who work shifts -details can be found at: Innisfree training timetable.

Friday's Swim Training

Friday the 28th of May will be the last coached swim session for the club.
Meet up at 6:15pm in Rosses Point Car Park aiming to be in the water for 6:30pm.
After this Friday we will revert to a meet and train format, coaching will no longer be available.
More experienced members will still be available to answer questions and give advice and encouragement to new swimmers.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

Thursday Night Bike Training

Bike training continues tomorrow night at the Summerhill roundabout; meet at 6:30, training at 6:45.

There will be a reporter present to picture the bikers in all their lycra glory -this is an excellent opportunity to raise the profile of the club; so be early.

The spins will now be neutralized (no pacework/ single file) while crossing the slipways at Carraroe and Ballysadare and at the roundabouts -so riders can use this as an opportunity to recover; don't forget to use the flyovers or the roundabout at Collooney (the group will go to the second roundabout) to catch up if you fall behind.

There will also be a group to suit novice bikers on the Saturday morning spin (meet at Markevicz park at 9am) which might suit some members.

-on a seperate note; thanks go to Dermott Cuningham for taking on the role of Assistant PRO for the club -if you feel that there are any club activities/ race reports that should get a mention in the local press send a mail to pro@sligotriathlon.ie.

Metalman Swim Series Round 1 Results

We were blessed with sunshine and flat, perfect swimming conditions for the first round of the Metalman Swim Series today, sponsored by Harry's Bar, Rosses Point. We had a big turnout of 44 swimmers, all club members.

Thanks go to Christy and the Civil Defence Lifeboat Crew, The McMorrow Brothers who laid the course out, Race Referee Phelim O'Doherty, Tim and the Sligo Kayak Club members, Lifeguard Rory O'Connor, Ronan McNamara on paddle board, Registrars Cecilia McGuinness & Wayne McNulty, Keiran Fitzgerald, Paul Burns and all the others who helped on the day.

We had a very disappointing number of competitors bringing marshals with them today.
4 Kayak club members and 3 Civil Defence Lifeboat Crew gave up their morning to help at this club event and we only had 2 or 3 competitors bring a marshal. The event cannot run without competitor support. Please bring a brother / friend / wife / husband etc to marshal with you so we don't run into problems on the day. Thanks to those who did bring someone and helped.

Congrats to newcomer Joe Waters who took first place in the time handicap, Scot Reid who looks to be successfully defending his title in the outright division and to Martha who narrowly took first place in the ladies division.

Particular congratulations go to new club members Roy Kelly, Kate Hawney, Mary Eglington and Maureen Laffey who completed their first ever 750m sea swim, setting them all up well for their first full distance triathlons and the remaining swim series races.

The handicaps will be recalculated for the next race based on today's results, so expect some changes.

If anyone has any photos from the event please contact sligotriathlon@gmail.com

Shane.

CHAIN DRIVEN CYCLES TIME TRIAL SERIES 3

The third in the series was back to the shorter distance of 13k with 28 participants turning out on a terrible night for cycling.

First home was Neil Walton followed by Eire ogs Alex Carey and Sean Flannery.
There was some improvement in the times for most riders from week 1 showing that all the hard training is paying dividends. Fair play to everybody for coming out.

Results of all the series so far can be seen on the BIKE TIME TRIAL MENU on the website
Again big thanks to all the marshals and time keepers for standing out in the rain for an hour!!

Metalman Swim Series Article One

As part of the build up to the Metalman Swim Series we will have a weekly article which covers various aspects of sea swimming.

The first is from club member Kieran Fitzgerald. Kieran has amongst other thing swam the English Channel (21 miles!!!) and also around Manhatten Island (28.5 miles!!!). He's pictured during his Manhatten swim.

Keiran took part in last years swim series and we're pleased to have him taking part again this year along with his son Liam.

Keiran is going to address the differences between swimming in the pool vs open water. While Keiran is operating at a very high level the points he makes are valid for any level of swimmer and well worth bearing in mind in the build up to the racing season.

Thanks to Keiran for this and we wish him the best in the races getting underway from sunday.

"There is a huge difference between swimming in the pool and swimming in the sea.The obvious factors that have to be taken into account that spring to mind are temperature, safety, direction, conditions, wetsuit, siting,

THE COLD
Water temperatures in May are usually approx. 10-13 degrees which is still quite cold.Wear a wetsuit that you feel comfortable in and is not restrictive. Before you zip up it is important that you put some antichaffing stick under your arms and in the neck area. This stops friction ,soreness and cuts that can happen in these areas through friction. with the wetsuit. Also bring a towel and clean your hands thoroughly before you put your hat and goggles on.This is important as if any dirt or grease gets on your goggles,in may impere your vision while swimming.

ACCLIMATIZING
Before the swim,go into th sea immerse yourself fully in the water. While there will be an initial 'shock' of cold water, this water will warm to your body temperature, and when you hit the water at 'GO',the cold water should not be an issue. After you immerse your face into the cold water, you may get an 'ice cream pain' in your head. This normaly lasts for between 30 seconds to two minutes but will eventually go away and is caused by the cold water. In warmer waters this will not be an issue such as the summer conditions in Ireland.

DIRECTION
Before the swim starts, pick a phyical feature in line with the last bhoy to aim for .While buoys are bright and look big from out of the water, they can be hard to see from in the water if there is a swell or high waves. The yacht club is generally a good marker to pick as a guide if swimming in that direction at Rosses Point. After the start sometimes there can be a 'bottleneck' at the first buoy.If you are a slower or weaker swimmer, take the corner five meters wider to aviod the hassle.

Durning the swim, cheak your position by looking for your 'physical feature' ,normally every six to eight strokes or so to keep straight.Do not rely on someone beside you for position as it often is a case of the blind leading the blind!!!!

TRAINING IN THE SEA
Sometimes we all get a little panicky during an sea water swim. We get so used to swimming in a nice clear pool that we tend to "freak" a little when we realize we can only see a few feet in front of us! And as a result, we tend to lift our head and check our position much too often. Unfortunately, the more we look, the more disruptive we are to our own stroke and pace. This will not only physically wear you out, but it can mentally tire you out as well. RELAX and have faith in your training and your stroke. You should be able to swim 6-8 strokes before lifting your head to cite without seriously straying off course.

Practice breathing on both sides during your swim training. Also, breathing on both sides will keep your stroke in balance and allow you to swim straighter for more strokes. During your swim training, practice breathing every three strokes. This will force you to breath on both sides.

Make sure to get lots of practice in the sea now that the summer has arrived.

Swims achived to date:
English Channel 21 miles
Straits of Gibraltar 11 miles
Around Manhatten Island 28.5 miles
Rottnest Island,Australia 14 miles

Metalman Swim Series Details

Swim Series Explained

Race Details:

Sign on starts from 10:00am at Rosses Point Car Park (Beachery Storage Shed, See Map). Race gets underway at 11:30am.

All participants must be members of Sligo Triathlon Club to take part, this is a club training event and is not open to the general public.

All swimmers must have Triathlon Ireland Membership andsign the supplied waiver on race day. Entry fee is €25 which covers all four races..

Safety:

Safety is first priority for the series. Attendance at the pre race briefing is compulsory.

Race safety cover includes: Lifeguard at tower.

Sligo Kayak Club will provide Kayaks on the water. The first kayak will stay ahead of the lead swimmer, another kayak will follow the last swimmer.

The Civil Defence Lifeboat will be on the water for the duration of the race.

All competitors must wear a wetsuit and brightly coloured swim hat and marker buoys will be used to mark out the course.

Categories and Prizes

There are two prize categories with all swimmers are automatically entered into both when they swim. Your three highest scoring races (there is a total of four events) will be used for points. Points from each week go into the league tables.

Handicap Category

Each swimmer will be given a time handicap before each race at pre-race briefing.

For the first race this will be based on recent triathlon swims if available or last years event. Handicaps will be updated each week and will be based on the previous weeks result.

How the handicap system will work

The start whistle will sound at “Go”. Any swimmers awarded a handicap of “Go” ie: 00:00, will start at the whistle. A stronger swimmer awarded a handicap of 2:00 for example will start 2 minutes after the whistle sounds. Start times will be called out by a marshal at the start line.

First over the finish line is awarded 1st position etc.

A Marshal will be in position at the finish line to record your finish time and position.

Points will be awarded, 50 for 1st, 49 for 2nd etc......

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th and 5th Place in the Handicap Category

Outright Category

This category is simple. Your position is determined by how long you take to complete the swim.

This is calculated after the race by subtracting your handicap from your race time. Example: Swimmer crosses line at 15:30 and has a handicap of 5:00, their outright time is 15:30 – 5:00 = 10:30

Points will be awarded, 50 for 1st, 49 for 2nd etc......

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th and 5th Place in the Outright Category and also ladies 1st, 2nd and 3rd

Sea Training Update

Wednesday's session will continue at 6:15pm and will be a meet and train session only.
There will be no coaching provided for beginners and intermediates.

Friday's 6:15pm session will have coaching for both the beginner and intermediate groups so if you can only make one of the two sessions this is the one to go to.

Friday's coaching will continue until early june when both sessions will be meet and train sessions only.

Remember to swim safely and never swim alone!

It was a lot warmer today!

Had a great turn out for the 2nd club sea swim today. Pictured are all the participants. Thanks go to Cecilia McGuinness and Scot Reid for taking the beginners out, and to Matt McGarrigle for looking after the advanced group.

The intermediate group covered over 600m on their swim with a run immediately afterwards, a loop of the first beach. We did some porpoise dive start/finish drills at the end and stressed the importance of relaxing while swimming and getting your head down in the water.
We will continue to work on sighting with all groups.

Next session on Friday with meet up for 6:15pm aiming to be in the water for 6:30pm. Water felt much warmer on a high tide with less of a wind chill, lot more enjoyable than fri!

If you're swimming outside the club sessions don't under any circumstances swim on your own in open water.

Newcomers remain more than welcome

Sea Training Weds 12th May

Hoping for another big turn out for swim training tomorrow (Weds 12th May) at rosses point, we'll meet up at 6:15pm and aim to be in the water for 6:30pm. We will have coaching for the beginners again this week and also coaching for the intermediate group so it's well worth going to.

Don't forget to bring a warm, bright swim hat and some body glide to prevent chaffing.

We will have Sligo Tri Club membership forms on hand tomorrow so new members can join up.

Velvet Strand Race Report

Club member Mark Capillitan took part in one of the first events of the Season at the Velvet Strand triathlon in Portmarnock north Dublin. It was the first running of this event. Mark's hard winter training paid off with an excellent 16th place finish overall, 1hr 10min 41sec, well done to Mark for that.

If anyone's planning on doing it next year, here's a brief recap of the course & race from Mark.

"Swim: the swim took place in a beautiful beach on Portmarnock strand. The sea was quite choppy so they shortened the course by roughly 100m or so. As a strong swimmer I've swam in much worse conditions, especially our own Metalman race last year. But the biggest issue with the swim was that it was broken into 6 wave starts. I couldn't see the need for this, as you've got a huge beach where a mass start would be fine. The waves weren't based on swim ability it was more age-groups, so each wave had a mix of swimmers anyway."

"Bike: the bike route had a number of changes to it leading up to the race...that's never good! The bike leg was a 3 lap route of the main road going from Portmarnock to near Malahide. The best part of the bike leg was that the road surface was billard table smooth, and mainly flat which meant it was quick. I have to say, that was the only good thing about the bike section. It was probably the most dangerous bike route I've ever been on. You can read all about it on Boards.ie here. But basically for anyone wanting a good time on the bike, it was near impossible, because of the 3 laps, you were always going to get stuck behind cars at some point.."

"Run: one of the nicest runs I've ever done. Very scenic with just a few rolling hills. The path was narrow in some parts, but that's not a major issue when running."

"So overall a good event, the bike section was the part they need to improve most which will probably happen for next year!"

Congrats to Una Mannion - Boyle Duathlon

We missed the fact that club member Una Mannion came first in the female 40+ category in the recent Boyle Duathlon. Congratulations to Una who has built on her 3rd place finish in last years Try event.

It will get warmer!!!!

We kicked off our first sea swim session last night and were delighted to see so many familiar and new faces there, we had almost 70 swimmers take part.

As you can see from the graph the water is only beginning to warm up so don't be put off by it for now, it gets a lot warmer as the summer continues.

Thanks go to the club members who helped out in the beginner's session, Padraig Hanly, Cecilia McGuinness, Adrian O'Connor, Alan Watters and Scot Reid. We had a lot of swimmers who'd not been in the sea before so well done to all of them for getting their open water careers underway.

Thanks also to Lynsey Dunne and Matt McGarrigle for looking after the intermediates and advanced swimmers.

Some people didn't have swim hats or used cloth/latex ones, you really need a good silicone hat (some people will wear two) at this time of year.

Hope to see everyone there again on weds, let's meet at 6:15pm in the same place and get into our groups.

In the mountain bike section Martha van der Melden posted a strong time with Clare M and Kate H hot on her heels.

Thanks to all the marshals and time keepers who gave up their time for the evening.

Boyle Fire and Rescue Charity Duathlon Results

Congratulations to everybody who took part in the event at the weekend. There is a noticeable improvement across a large number of members times in the race which had a large Sligo Triathlon contingent.

Special congratulation go to Cecilia McGuinness who took third place the womens race with a very impressive time and also to Brian Sexton who ran his way into fourth spot in a very competitive mens field.
This was a great event overall and and hopefully becomes a permanent fixture on the local sporting calender.
Congrats to Tommy Sheridan, Sligo Tri Club member and the Boyle Tri club for a successful and enjoyable event.

If somebody can clarify that Sean Flannery won a silver medal in the welly throwing competition that would be great!!
