It’s the basics and is intended for people who have not swum in open water before and are not sure what to expect or what type of wetsuit to get etc.
This is something well worth attending for new swimmers to the club as the countdown to getting into the sea gets underway.

This Weekends Duathlon

We will need an organising crew for next weekends duathlon. We will need a timekeeper and a minimum of six marshals. The only people who are expmpt are the crew that are organising the summers sprint event i.e. Colm Casey, Shane O Doherty, John Hanley, David Downes, Adrian O Connor, Tommy Shierdan. So please volunteer your name or volunteer a mature marshal in your place. If we dont get enough marshals Sligo Tri competitors will have to marshal the race.

Swim Video Analysis...

It's time for another swim video analysis session. This will take place on Tuesday 30th March in Sligo Regional Sports Complex.
Anyone wishing to take part must be there at 9:30pm sharp so we can get everyone organised since we're tight on time.
All tri club swimmers (including friday night swimmers) are welcome to come along and take part. The cost of this is covered already in the swim fee so there's no extra charge.
This is well worth doing since to get it done elsewhere is very expensive. Thanks to Mark Capillitan again for helping out with video.
Swimmers will have video shot from mulitiple angles both above and below the water. It's an invaluable tool in improving technique.
A review session will be set up same as last term to go through the videos with each swimmer. Everyone will get a CD with their own footage on it.
For more information speak to Shane or Colm at the swim training sessions.

Calling all marshalls...

Two local bike races; the Mooney Trophy and Markievicz Cup take place this Saturday and Sunday (20th & 21st March). Details of the races can be found on the Eire Og Website. There is a 30 mile category A4 race on Saturday which might suit anyone looking to sharpen up the bike split on an olympic distance event.

For anyone not competing the club is looking for marshalls to help out on either day. Eire Og are strong supporters of our club and have played a big part in helping to run the annual Rosses Point triathlon, and have also set up an annual time trial series which most Sligo Tri Club members take part in. As these type of events are run on a voluntary basis it goes without saying that the more people that get involved, the bigger and better they become -so if you have a couple of hours to spare on either Saturday or Sunday grab the tea and ham sandwiches and check out the racing. Contact club cycle officer Colm Casey on 0876811197 if you can attend.

Carna (Galway) Tri Open for entry

The Galway triathlon, which takes place in Carna on the 17th July is open for entry on the runireland website . Although a bit of a drive from town (~2hrs) the event had a small Sligo contingent last year and would be good preperation for the annual Rosses Point race. It is run over the international Olympic distance and the run leg takes in a couple of severe climbs.

2010 Swim Series dates announced...

The dates for the 2010 Sligo Tri Club swim series have been announced. The races take place on the 23rd May, 6th, 13th & 23rd June.

Details and updates can be found on the Swim Series Homepage.

We had over 50 swimmers take part in what was a very successful series last year (see the newspaper report on the 2009 races).

The club would ask all swimmers to support the series by taking part, for another open water race like this you have to go to Galway!

The races are time handicapped so the slower swimmers go first meaning everyone's in with a chance of winning. Handicaps are recalculated each week based on previous weeks results.

Distances start off at a very manageable 750m (Sprint Tri Swim) up to 1500m for the last one.

Points are awarded each week for your position with prizes given out at the end based on total points in the league at bbq in Harry's bar.

It's your best 3 from 4 races that count for points.

The club would encourage improving swimmers to take part as the races will help you get used to open water swimming at the start of the tri season. 750m is 30 lengths of the sports complex pool so it's very doable.

If you're interested in taking part Contact – Shane, sligocitytriathlon@gmail.com, cost will be in the region of €20 which includes all four races.

Mullaghmore duathlon race report...

Over seventy local multi-sport athletes turned up in Mullagmore for the first race in the interclub Duathlon series jointly hosted by Mullagmore Tri Club and Sligo Tri Club. Due to the promised frost a later than advertised start of 11am gave participants a couple of extra hours sleep. Unusually for this time of year a bright sunny day with a biting easterly breeze greeted the athletes for the season opener. The race consisted of a 2.5 k run out and back run passing some breathtaking views of Mullagmore headland. The run was followed by a 23k cycle from Mullagmore to Bundoran and finished with an identical leg sapping 2.5k out and back run.

The first race of the season always brings out the jitters, as racers are eager to test out their conditioning after a long dark winters training. One thing was clear from the line up was that the Gary’s cycles and chain driven cycle shops are doing very well from the rising popularity of triathlon and multi-sport by the array of new bikes on display.

In the male event Neill Walton (Sligo Tri) was clear favourite on the day with the absence of the big guns Ross mc Lynn (Sligo Tri) and Pat Thouy (MSC tri). The main contenders from Sligo Tri club were Colm Casey, Mark Capilitan, Wayne mc Nulty, Sean Flanery fresh from a top ten finish in Limerick two weeks ago, and newcomer Eamon Mc Andrew who has showed outstanding promise over the last couple of months in training. John Mc Sharry and Oliver White from MSC tri carried their best hopes of a podium place. In the women’s event Cecilia Mc Guinness (Sligo Tri) and Caoimhe Ni Mhurchu (Sligo tri) were clear favourites to take the women’s event, after a long hard winters training .

Walton set a impressive pace from the gun posting 8.30s for the first 2.5k with Flannery, John Mc Sharry, Fergus Scott and newcomer Mc Andrew. After a quick transition Walton had a sizeable lead starting the bike section. Colm Casey (Sligo Tri) starting the bike section in fifth place quickly reeled in the chasers and set of in pursuit of Walton. At the turnaround it looked like Casey would reel in the leader but Walton managed to hold on to the finish of the bike section maintaining small gap of about 15 seconds. Next of the bike was Mc Andrew a further three minutes behind closely followed by Sean Flanery, John Mc Sharry, Mark Capilitan, Stephen Carty and Mc Nulty. Walton was not going to be caught and pushed hard on the run to extend his lead completing the course in a time of 0:59:23, Casey chased hard but could not close the gap and finished in a time of (1:00:48), with newcomer Eamon Mc Andrew (1:03:12) completing a clean sweep of the podium for Sligo Tri. This was a phenomenal performance for a first timer and definitely one to watch closely for the future. Next few athletes across the line included Sean Flanery (1:04:00), John Mc Sharry (1:04:10) the first MSC tri man home, closely followed by clubman Oliver White (1:05:10) in sixth place. The remainder of the top ten included Sligo tri members Mark Capiltan (1:05:30), Wayne Mc Nulty (1:06:52), Stephen Carty (1:07:24) and Fergus Scott (1:07:27)

In the women’s event as predicted Caoimhe Ni Mhurchu lead the first run form Cecilia Mc Guinness. Mc Guinness (1:11:33) showed her prowess on the bike and opened up a strong lead entering transition, which she held onto over the 2nd run leg. The fast advancing Ni Mhurchu (1:13:02) was in 2nd position with Una Mannion (1:15:03) posting an impressive third position in her first event. The top 3 were closely followed by Enna mc Hale, Saoirse O Donohue and Jackuline O Connor.

Click here to download the full result sheet

The next event in the series will take place in Rosses Point. The meeting point will be the car park The event will consist of a 2.5k run – 20k cycle -2.5k run.
