Club egroup message board

For anyone who cannot make the official club trainings there is an egroup at: SligoTriathlonClub where they can post training times and co-ordinate smaller groups at times to suit.

This might be usefull as the open water season kicks off where training can only be done safely in a group. It could also serve as a buy and sell for club members looking to sell/ upgrade kit. The site requires a yahoo mail account which can be set up at login.

(the latest posts are on the top left of this blog).

Training and event update

The Thursday night bike sessions are continuing to grow, with three groups taking to the road last night for beginners, intermediate and advanced cyclists. It is hoped that as the season progresses we can develop more training specific to each of these groups -in the meantime meet on Thursdays @ 6:15 at the roundabout outside Summerhill College.

Payment for the club gear is also due so if you still have not got round to it contact John (jnaz@eircom.net) or post it to: John Hanley, Nazareth House, Church Hill, Sligo -marked private and confidential.

The last of the local duathlons takes place this Sunday in Boyle @ 12pm, it is being part organized by one of our members and proceeds are going to a very worthy cause so if you are free it is well worth a trip to Lough Key -more details here.

The triathlon racing season proper is almost upon us and the club is looking to establish course records for club members (male/ female by age group). We are looking for records in Sprint, Olympic, Half-Ironman, Ironman (if anyone is mad enough) and records for best club 10k run, 40k time trial and 750 and 1500m swims. If you are racing don't forget to mail your results to sligotriathlon@gmail.com, as this is the first year of compiling these records now is the perfect chance to get your name into the club hall of fame!

Sea Swimming Begins - 7th May

Sea swimming is going to begin on Friday 7th May at Rosses Point Beach.

Weekly club meet-ups will be at 6:30pm Weds and 6:30pm Friday.

We'd ask club members not to form smaller groups going out early/late on Weds/Fri and to stick to the time above, safety in numbers, better training etc.

If people are swimming other days to above, never swim alone, more safety info on http://www.iws.ie/index.html

We will all meet up at 6:00pm at the "beachery" for the first session. This is the old shed type building just up from the main car park. Will do a very quick (10min)run through on the club guidelines for open water training which everyone needs to attend. We'll aim to be suited up and in the water for 6:30pm.

We will break off into three groups.

Advanced group will be for experienced swimmers who've done lots of tri's and are trying to shave some time off their swim. They will go over the 2nd beach and swim across approx 1km depending on conditions.

Intermediate group will be made up of strong pool swimmers with limited or no open water experience, they will be swimming a shorter distance on the first beach. Approx 500m to start with. Club coaches will be on the first beach to help the intermediates during the session.

The beginners will be made up of people who can swim in the pool but are only starting into open water swimming. We're doing three introductary sessions which are aimed at complete novices to open water swimming. If you're nervous about getting into the sea then these are for you, we will have experienced club members easing you into the water with the sessions taking a structured format. The second and third intro sessions will be on Weds 12th May 6:30pm and Fri 14th May again at 6:30pm.

We will ensure no one gets left behind.

Looking forward to seeing you all there

Swim Series Sponsor Announced

With great pleasure we can announce that Harry's Bar, Rosses Point will be the event sponsor for the upcoming Sligo Triathlon Club Swim Series.

Thanks to Fintan who's always been a good fried of the club.

It's a great bar with nice views of the bay and channel, well worth a visit.

Pictured at the announcement in Harry's were Event Committee Members Cecilia, Phelim and Shane along with members of the RNLI (including Alan Watters a tri club member), Civil Defence Lifeboat Crew and Sligo Kayak Club.

Water cover will be provided by the RNLI, Civil Defence Lifeboat and Kayak club without which we could not run the event, their help is much appreciated.

Chain Gang

We had a excellent turnout for the chaingang on last Thursday. Approximately 15-20 turned out for the up and over session. There were 2 groups due to the variation in standards. Reports back suggest that we should have 3 groups. The idea of a chain gang is to ride at tempo for the session. The average speed of the advanced group was a little under 23 mph. Just a few clarifications. If a rider gets dropped they should continue riding and use one of the flyovers at pearse road or Caltragh on the way into town to cross the road safely and recover until the group catchs you. On the way to Colloney the front group will continue to ride until the 2nd roundabout in Colloney. Therefore if you get dropped you continue to the 1st roundabout and get back onto the group. If you are dropped very early cross over at Ballyhedrehid or there is a gap in the barrier around 2 miles from Colloney.

Any rider who was dropped by their group last week should try and just hold the wheels of the riders in front dont ride through as the tempo is to hard or miss a couple of turns to recover

Meet @ 6.30pm Train @ 6.45 pm. If you are late either drive to Colloney or Cycle to Ballyhedrhid and cross over to the other side. Dont try and chase onto the group.

This week we will have 3 groups - Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced.

To make this session work we really need number so please turn up on Thursday and we will group riders based on their ability. The session is not meant to be easy but if you want an easier session you can drop back groups

Wetsuit Fitting Session - 25th April

Sligo Triathlon Club in association with Chain Driven Cycles is running a wetsuit fitting session on Sunday April 25th at Rosses Point at 4pm.

http://www.chaindrivencycles.com/

Stephen will have a full size range of Zoot wetsuits on hand as well as changing facilities. People can try on the suits and swim with them in the tidal pool (full tide is at 4:30pm so we should have lots of water in there).

If you're looking to buy a wetsuit this is a great way of trying some different designs and sizes out. There is no obligation to buy and no fee either so it's well worth doing for people buying their first suit and those considering an upgrade.

The club is committed to supporting local businesses where possible.

More information to follow on pricing...

People can and do use general purpose surfing wetsuits for triathlons so a specific triathlon wetsuit is not essential but is advisable. Swimming wetsuits have differences in thickness in the right places to improve body position, slick outer surface to reduce drag, increased flexibility etc..

All club members are welcome to come along, email sligotriathlon@gmail.com to reserve a place as we will need to know numbers attending by sunday 18th April.
Any other questions email shane at the address above.

JOIN A CHAIN GANG...

There will be an outdoor bike session in place of the Thursday "turbo" session to take advantage of the bright evenings and good weather -the first one takes place this Thursday @ 6:45 -meet at the entrance to Summerhill College at 6:30pm. The session will take the form of a high tempo "up and over" session up and down the dual carriageway. The training will suit most as riders can use the flyovers to rejoin the group if dropped. The training should last no more than an hour and a half and is an ideal way to get up to speed for the bike section of triathlon.

Round 3 of the duathlon series is this Sunday (11th April):

2.5k run; 20k cycle; 2.5k run
Same distance again due to popular deamand.

Meet at Rosses Point beach car park at 9am.

...
we need marshalls to make the event a success so if you are competing then bring a friend/ family member to help out -the more people that help run these races, the more races can take place.
