Rosses Point Sprint - Entry Closing Very Soon

Rumor has it that we are fast approaching our closing limit. Last chance for any club members who have not entered. The entry will close at 330 or very early next week. We have well over 300 entries at the moment so we are well up on last years entry. Anyone who has not entered get it done now and don't be looking for a late one.

Good luck also to Roy & Aisling

While Lynsey is making her way to France, closer to home long time club racer Roy will be busy getting married -good luck to the happy couple; rumour has it that Aisling is going to join up for the 2012 season...

Final Testing Time Trial

The training time trial series comes to an end on Wednesday. Text (0876811197) or email (casey.colm@gmail.com to confirm your starting place. Any club members who has never tested before and wants to a go your more than welcome. Winds are light onshore or head wind on the way back. Times should be quick.

Hell of the West Race Report- by Colm

Pre race- Seven am - shower, bowl of porridge, toast and jam and 750ml of high five. I had a good laugh at mouse eating his fried egg, thinking who will be sick later. Down to transition a bit of a spin on the bike to check the wind on the deep section. To windy and a quick change of wheel.

Transition - The place is like fort Knox. They have all the racks numbered and they have it lay ed out so all clubs are beside each other( good idea). Cecilia has locked her keys in the car so a bit of a panic arises and spent 15 minutes arguing with someone who has taken her spot to f...k off. Eventually they realise they are in the wrong spot. Quick change and toilet stop. No sign of ceilia before the start so she must be stuck.

Swim time- 800 participants were in transitions and we all had to cross the mat to be counted out. We got caught at the back. I basically ran the length of the beech and dived into the water. I swam about 50 meters to the start buoy and the guy waved the flag. The thought crossed my mind that mc lynn and mouse were still chatting on the beech. The first 600 meters was into an onshore chop and against a pushing tide. I missed a pack of swimmers and a potential good draft. I ended swimming behind a large group on my own wasting energy. They eventually pulled away and I lost around 2 minutes. Mental thought - practice drafting. I was first of our boys out of the water with Mc lynn right behind me and mouse about 1.30 behind us.

Onto the bike. I passed a few on the first little hill and then Marty Grealish passed me on the bike. I decided to use Marty as my marker and kept him within sight for the outward leg and the wind on our backs. I passed around 20 in the first 10 k and then just kept picking them off one by one on the return into the wind. I passed Marty on the way back into kilkee and picked off a few more. I could barely see a couple of participants in the distance but had no chance of bridging across. I was on my own for the last 15 k into the wind. I was only passed by one rider all day so I knew I had a decent split on a tough day. Mc Lynn had a decent bike but mouse was disappointed with his time. When we checked his bike afterwards his back wheel was stuck to the frame. Hense the slow time.

Run - I was in around 15 place starting the run. The run basically starts at sea level and rises to over the first5 k. There was 470 feet of elevation gain. Not my type of run but the same for everyone. You turn around and run back 5 k back down to sea level. My plan was to run a 45 min 10 k. Its a tough course and I am no mean runner. My tool to execute the plan was my Garmin 310 xt. All I had to do was run 6 x 7.30 minute miles. I felt lik I was moving ok and decided to try and reach the turn with 7.45 miles pace. Mc lynn passed me like a mountain goat just after 3.5k. I was happy enough as last time he went by me after 1k. I was surprised that mouse hadnt passed me by the turn and when I finally did meet him I was still a kilometer ahead. A quick cange of pace on the downhill section and push as hard as possible. Quickly the Garmin went down under the 7.30 target pace to around 7.20. All in vain as I got the pat on the back at the bottom of the last rise with about 1k to go. I finished with a 7:25 pace and was delighted that I had done my target time. I was shocked when I saw my run spilt 46:54. School boy error there are 6.2 miles in a 10k. Got my pacing wrong. However, I was quite happy as I had knocked 11 minutes of my previous time in 2009 and placed 48.

My lynn stormed through the field like a mountain goat and posted a top ten run split. He picked up a penalty somewhere along the line and got demoted from 21st to 30th overall. Mouse stormed through the field on the run passing around 50 runners to place 46th. When you look at the size and quality of the field we didn't do too bad. Every athlete in the top 20 are regularly race winners so if Mc Lynn and mouse pick up there performance levels a little it wont be long until they are winning.

The hell of the west is the premier event on the calender. The strongest field without a doubt every year and the organisation is flawless. Excellent goddy bag, secure transition area, well marshaled, good atmosphere, good food, recovery area with loads of massage and according to Cecilia a great after party. In my opinion in comparison to last weeks event, last weeks event is the same price and that's where the comparison ends.

The hell of the west is what all events should be run like. The event is run for triathletes by triathletes and is worth every penny of the entry fee. A must do for everyone. The organisers know what everyone wants from a triathlon. If you have not done this event before I would recommend participating.

Warrior of the Sea Race Report

Saturday saw the running of the annual Warrior of the Sea 6km swim from Rosses Pt to Strandhill. Conditions were challenging but thankfully made the event runable.
Wind was a moderate south westerly and there was next to no ground swell.

Things kicked off with a smooth, straight forward swim across the channel with a run over the end of coney island. Conditions were quite choppy after re-entering the water making it difficult to get rhythm going or to sight the first buoy. It was hard going around the islands with low cloud on the ox mountains which is an important sighting point for the swim. Once around bluerock things got much easier with a flat Strandhill making it easy to see the big sand dune and make the final push to the strand. A good crowd had gathered on the beach for the finish which made for a great atmosphere for the swimmers as they exited the water. Water support was excellent all the way along and made people feel safe and really helped with guiding people in the right direction. Water temperature was low with a lot of upswell this week, 16 very brave swimmers went without wet suits. A strong national turn out made for an extremely competetive event with local lifeguard John Morton taking overall honors with what can only be described as a devestating swim.

The club was extremely well represented both in numbers and performances. Our very own Lynsey Dunne took the Warrior of the Sea title in the female category with an impressive swim that leaves her well set up for her English Channel attempt at the weekend. Lynsey is picture receiving her handcarved trophy from organiser Scot Reid along with Sponsor (and competitor) Willie Tyndall.

Shane O'Doherty was the first club member ashore with Swim Series Winner Caoimhe ni Mhurachu and Alan Shaw both breaking the two hour mark with impressive swims. Trevor McSharry, John Burrows and Marie-Claire McKenna all broke the 2hr15 with strong swims. Padraig Hanley finished well with Lisa Dunne close behind in her first Warriors Swim. Channel Swimmer Kieran Fitzgerald braved the elements leaving the wetsuit behind with Darren Duncan right behind him at the finish. Adrian O'Connor, Paul Burns and Wayne McNulty reached the shore in close succession. A visibly cold John Hanley finished just in front of Paul "Sam" McGarry. Sandra Deery and Martha Van Der Mulen crossed the line together pushing each other along the way. Anthony Blake put in a heroic display to finish his longest swim to date, regretting his big breakfast at the final buoy where he off-loaded it onto one of the kayaks! Bryan Whelan was close behind and John Dolan finished to round out a great day for the club.

A bbq was enjoyed in the Strand Bar afterwards by all particpants and volunteers.

Everyone enjoyed the event which was organised by club member Scot Reid.

Club swim and run tomorrow

For anyone not competing in either Kilkee 'hell of the west', warrior of the sea or Ransboro 10k this weekend (or even for those who are and fancy some last minute cramming!) the club swim and run session takes place in Rosses Point at 7pm.

This is a chance for members of all ability to meet and train together and is well worth doing -even if it is just to build up a thirst for Friday night partying.

Good luck to everyone racing, if you are racing and get a chance to tap your thoughts on the days racing into an email; please send them (and a photo if you managed to snap one) on to either Shane, Colm, Brian or Cecilia so we can get the blog race reports for 2011 up and running -it's always good to get a first hand description...

Bike Week - Time Trial

Well done everyone and good to see a few new faces. Your more than welcome again next week. Great Turnout for a wet and windy night . Best predicted times for the ladies was (1st) Sheila Ryan (2nd) Thresa Kilganon and the boys was (1st) Micheal Devins and Paul Keough. Colm has the uncollected prizes for the girls.

A few short points on safety - loads of people are cutting the first corner and are putting their own lives in danger. It was reported that there were a few near misses last night. You cannot at any stage break the rules of the road and nearly everyone done so last night. Whoever was cycling down the promenade on the footpath scaring the living daylight out of walkers will ya please cop on and have some level of responsibility.

First sub 19 with an 18:54. A new club male record set by Brian Sexton (Sligo Tri) 19:29 and a new club female record has been set by Saoirse O Donoghue (Sligo Tri Club) 23:09.
