Channel Cup Swim 2011.
Club member Tom Ford has asked us to mention the following:
"There was a traditional swim held in Rosses Point during the 60’s and 70’s called the Channel Cup Swim. A group have formed to re establish this event and Tom Ford from our club is helping out. The swim will take place next Saturday 16th July at 6.30pm. Registration opens at 5.45pm in the Yacht Club. Changing/shower facilities are available in the yacht club.
The swim will start at the slip at the yacht club and head toward the Metalman and then down the channel toward town with the prom on the swimmers left hand side. The distance is approx 1400m and swimmers will be assisted by the incoming tide. The finish line is approx opposite Harrys Bar and swimmers will be boated back to the yacht club once they have completed the swim.
Traditionally there was a large crowd spectating along the prom as the swimmers passed by and entrants are encouraged to bring along a fan club to cheer them on.
Spaces are limited to the first 50 entries.
Cost of entry will be €20 and spaces are limited to the first 50 entries. There will be a prize giving after the swim in the yacht club and entrants will be fed with gourmet burgers!!!!! There will also be a swim hat provided by the organisers.
Spectators/children are more than welcome to prize giving ceremony and the yacht club are making the facilities of the club available to all.
There will be a Channel Cup presented to the first male and female swimmer home.
As the conditions could be testing, inexperienced swimmer should think twice about entering. The current through the channel can be quite strong.
