Paul "Sam" McGarry has asked us to mention a great new swim race which will be taking place in Lough Gill in Sligo/Leitrim later in the summer. It sounds like an excellent event and is in aid of a very good cause and we wish the organisers and competitors the best of luck, there are bound to be a good few club members taking part.
"The Lough Gill swim in aid of the North West Hospice will take place on 20th August, 2011
This 8.5 km swim will commence at 1pm. The starting point is Shrif (on the Dromahair road about 2 kms past Parkes Castle ) The finishing point is at the Aughamore Boat House.
We are hoping that a piece of history will be made as this will be the first time a group of 20 Swimmers will set off on Lough Gill on this challenge together.
Few interesting facts:
Captain Web was the first male swimmer to swim the channel in 1875? Interestingly, he trained in Lough Gill when he was in Sligo to prepare for his challenge.
Also, noteworthy is that Owen O Keefe, the youngest person to swim the English Channel at the age of 16 has already entered the event.
