2nd annual Try-Athlon Race Report

Congradulations to the field of over 70 competitors who took part in the race under what were challenging wet conditions, and also thanks to the large crowd who came out to cheer them on.

This year entrants varied in age from 16 to 63 years of age, with more females completing the course than males. Local Radio personality Francie Boylan was among those completing their first triathlon.

Things got underway with a 25 metre swim (10 lengths) with Paul Barr putting in a fast swim to take an early lead into the transition. The race then headed for a loop around the holy well.

The challenging hills on the bike route took their toll on some, but not Seamus Somers who set a blistering pace on the bike. Athletes finished up the race with a hilly 4k run around the racecource.

Cartron bay native Brian Kinsella took first place in the mens category having gained a lot of ground during the cycle and run. "I think that despite the rain everybody enjoyed it", said a delighted Brian Kinsella after crossing the line.

Ciaran Coyne did enough to see Seamus Sommers into third place in a thrilling sprint to the line.

Martha Van Der Mulen took the honours in the womens category holding onto the lead despite some stiff competition in the run. Senead Donnaghers swim (second fastest overall) gave her the momentum to secure second place. Una Mannion took third place honours among the ladies.

Honorable mentions go to Paul Leonard and John Heneghan who took part in the closest sprint of the day, with Paul edging the sprint by the narrowest of margins.

Prizegiving took place in Carraroe Community Centre, where Special Olympics Ireland were presented with a donation by Stephen Carty on behalf of Sligo City Triathlon Club.
