SWIM SERIES SAT MOVED TO MULLAGHMORE

Predicted conditions for Saturday look terrible for rosses point with it receiving large swell and wind that will not be sheltered from and make swimming dangeros.
Means we need to move the next round of the swim series to Mullaghmore. Without this move it would have been extremely unlikely that we could run saturday's event.
We will meet and do registration from the same car park as last time.

Don't forget to bring your yellow race hat and registration will open at 15:15 and close at 15:45 sharp.

All competitors have have been emailed about this but still spread the word as much as you can please

Warrior of the Sea

Scot Reid has asked us to mention the upcoming Warrior of the Sea with the press release below....

"The 2nd annual Warrior of the Sea Swim from Rosses Point to Strandhill promises to be a truly spectacular affair.
With top swimmers from around the country registered to compete for the Michael Quirk designed perpetual Warrior of the Sea trophy, this years event, which takes place at 7:15am on Saturday 25th June is set to be the most competitive yet.

Starting at Rosses Point from the Sligo Yacht Club slipway, competitors have to navigate themselves across the notoriously fast moving channel between the mainland and Coney Island. Once safely across, swimmers exit the water briefly to cross over the rock causeway of Blackrock Lighthouse, reentering the water to begin the main section of the race. Swimmers then round Coney Island and McGuins Island, past the end of the runway and across Sligo Bay toward Strandhill beach.

Competitors will them have to make their way through the crashing waves at Strandhill Beach to reach the finish line located in front of the car park. A total distance of 6km. The fastest time for the swim is 1 hour 30 minutes but with the high standard of entrant this year, that record is surely going to be broken.

Once again we are indebted to the generosity of the Sligo Civil Defence and Sligo Kayak club who are providing safety support for the event.

Registration for the event can be gained through the website www.wots.biz and all online entries close on the 5th June 2011.

This years event is kindly sponsored by Tindal Wine Merchants, The Strand Bar, Voya and Outerpoint Surf Shop."

Metalman Swim Series Wk 1 Results

Next round of Swim Series takes place Saturday 28th May. Venue to be confirmed based on sea conditions. Will be Rosses Point unless conditions won't allow for it in which case it will be mullaghmore. Decision will be made on Thursday morning and communicated via email to competitors and blog.

Well done to everyone who took part yesterday especially anyone who did their first 750m sea swim. Special thanks to the swim series committee and civil defence and kayak club who's assistance made everything run very smoothly along with swimmers who brought marshals.

Sligo Tri on the podium in Spiddal

The race was run off in terrible conditions with the swimming leg being shortened (Olympic only) and condensed to the harbour area with a long run back to transition. The cycle was in gaelforce winds with driving rain and the run was best described as confusing with all the competitors and loads of heats on a 1.2 mile circuit.

In the sprint race there was some great performances from some of our newer members who chose a race/day they might want to forget. It gets easier than today. Well done to Eanna sean Machale, John Dolan, Kara Davey, Thersea Killgallon, Bernie O Connor on their great performances.

All in all it was a great day for the club and particularly for all the sprint competitors as the conditions and course was cruel. If you can finish a triathlon today you will all finish any triathlon any day.

Well done to Cecillia on a fine 2nd place in the Ladies Olympic race in spiddal. Hopefully this is the start of a good few podiums over the Summer. She had the fastest swim split and was only passed during the latter stages of the runs.

In the men's Olympic distance Sligo tri had 3 members in the top ten. Colm was first of the club members out of the water and off the bike and was closely followed by Gary Higgins. Both in the top five. Gary and Brain had super running legs with Gary posting one of the fastest splits for 10k @ 35mins. Gary just ran out of road and was unlucky not get on the podium. Brian ran just under 38 mins for a fine seventh place, with colm down in 10th place

Best way to explain the race was that it was run by an overpriced Raynair. The race was not a patch on some of the better club races being run around the country, however, the cost was the same. We should vote with our feet support good quality club races

Looks good for sligo tri club for the summer. Hopefully we are building towards some good results. Well done every one.

Full results on Chipit- (Eamon mc Andrew running has not collapsed since the birth of twins).

IMPORTANT SWIM SERIES SUN MOVED TO MULLAGHMORE

As you would have seen at rosses point on monday the weather has been pretty bad resulting in rough sea conditions continuing into sunday. With that in mind we've taken the decision after consulation with our water safety crews to move this sunday's swim series race to mullaghmore. Based on current wind models and swell predictions the event would not run in rosses point.

Mullaghmore beach is very much sheltered compared to Rosses Point meaning it won't be hit by the same swell and wind won't be near as strong. It's a nice swimming beach and will be familiar to anyone who's done the mullaghmore triathlon.

We will meet at the beach car park in Mullaghmore with registration starting at 2:45pm and finishing at 3:30pm. The race will get underway at 4pm.

If you raced on Monday don't forget to bring your yellow hat.

Please spread the word, I am texting the swimmers as well and putting this on the blog

We could have changed to another date but it would mean a lot of people could miss the reorganised date due to family or work commitments so the fairest thing was to change venue.

Good luck in the race and if you have any questions contact shane

Well Done to All Swimmers - Swim Series Pre Race

Well done to everyone who took part in the Metalman Swim Series Pre Race. The weather conspired against us with heavy rain and wind making things tough and some ground-swell to boot! This meant we shortened the race to approximately 300 meters.

21 swimmers completed the race in challenging conditions on the 2nd beach in rosses point.

A lot of the swimmers had never done a race in the sea before and handled the new challenge with ease, setting themselves up nicely for the remaining events.

Thanks to everyone from the club who helped with marshalling and running the race. Special thanks to the guys who took to the water to provide safety for the swimmers, Kevin O'Donnell, Padraig Hanly, Scot Reid, Jan Canham and Matt McGarrigle.

Swimmers are listed below in alphabetical order. We're not publishing the times from this race but if anyone would like their own time that's no problem email shane_odoherty@yahoo.co.uk

Metalman Swim Series Article 1

As part of the swim series we're going to be posting an article before each race. These articles are written by club members and intended to help people improve as they go along. The first one is from the winner of the april pool time trial event Mairin Laffey. In a new departure for the blog we have it in both English and Irish! It's excellent and well worth a read for newcomers to sea swimming.

I joined the Triathlon club after completing the Tri-a-Tri event last year, I could run and enjoyed a casual cycle but Swimming posed a huge problem I could not swim two strokes never mind a length .Six months later here I was preparing to enter the sea for the first time with my new found friends that I had been training with throughout the winter months, in the sports complex under the expert of guidance of Colm Casey and Shane O’Doherty, as you can see it took two to coach me!!!, seriously though they taught us the basic skills, then technique combined with speed and finally endurance and survival skills for the race. I enjoyed the weekly classes while the personal challenge of putting what I had learned in class into my own practice sessions was slow and challenging but very rewarding…I

I had never intended in doing a Triathlon and always felt that it was something that I would not complete due to the weakness of my swimming. However as the weeks turned into months I found that I was slowly opening up to the idea of possibly competing in July as my swimming technique gradually improved. I cannot emphasis enough that without the support fellow members and swim trainers I would not have completed Mullaghmore not alone Rosses Pt. To share your fears/demons/insecurities with others enabled me to realise that I am not alone. To know that others struggle particularly as a new member was encouraging to me. To know that there are others of similar ability gives me a sense of security, as I found it intimidating when I saw the more experienced swimmers 'take off'.
We had a private fitting of the wet suit in the water at the yacht club pier and to me that was daunting I felt very scared and unable to control my body I felt I was on the moon.

The first time we went into the water - it was so important to go back to the very basics i.e. to sit in the water in the arm chair position in the wet suit and secure in the confidence that I could not drown. There were a few swim instructors who encouraged and supported the group just to get a feel of the water prior to start swimming in the water. This was a huge benefit to me. I was very scared but with the support I did it. The first couple of sessions in the water were about safety and reassurance and not about swimming. I clearly recall one very stormy day and I wanted to run back to the car but we were encouraged to catch hands in a line and enter the waves together, I still recall the scene and am sure others can still hear my screams , that was the turning point for me I knew I had learned new skills both endurance and survival and had moved on to a new level

Each time we went out to swim a person was appointed to keep head count - this ensured that when we reached our agreed end point that all heads were accounted for – again this was very comforting and when the swim series began it was encouraged that you brought along a marshal to assist with the smooth running of the series.

I cannot emphasis enough how the swim series helped me, having had no clue about Triathlons this gave me some sense of what it may be like during the swim part of the Triathlon. Again safety was of paramount - to know that there were people in canoes out in the water restored my confidence, On the first race I was concerned that I would not finish the race , I still recall Ronan Mc Namara close by in his kayak willing me to finish as I struggled to finish and then to hear the applause ok I was last but that didn’t matter the sense of achievement was immense.

Sighting I found was difficult and meant that I invariably went off course which made my race longer and more difficult while I struggled to get back in line, so hopefully this year I will concentrate more to keep on course. Arriving early is very important and remember to leave all jewellery at home, velco towel wraps are handy as we change at the back of our car boots and bring a bottle of water or two

Finally my fears and psychological battles within the water continue to play a part (small) in my uneasiness in the water. I don’t know if I will ever be comfortable in the water, however through discipline, reasoning, control of my thoughts & imagination I continue to be highly motivated to improve my swimming and to enjoy my time out in the sea. Each time I swim the sense of accomplishment that I have when I reach the beech is amazing It makes it all worthwhile - such an achievement :-)
.

Thosaigh mé ag freastal ar an Club Triathlon tar-eis dom an Tri-Tri a chriochnú anuraidh. Bhí mé áblata rith agus thaithin liom a bheith ag rothaíocht ó h-am go chéile ach ba é an snámh an rud ba mhó a bhí ag cur as dom, ní raibh mé ábalta snámh ró-mhaith ar chor ar bith! Ach sé mhí ina dhiaidh sin bhí mé réidh le haghaidh m’aghaidh a thabhairt ar an usice le mo chairde nua. Le linn míonna fhada an gheimhridh bhí mé féin agus mo chairde nua gnóthach ag traenáil faoi stiúr Cholm Casey agus Shane O’Doherty san ionad spóirt. Sea, bhí beirt ag teastáil le hagahidh mé a thraenáil! Bhí an traenáil a fuair mé uathu thar barr, mhúin siad na scileanna bunúsacha dom agus ansin na teicnicí a bhí ag teastáil le haghaidh cur le mo chuid luais agus scileanna maireachtála le haghaidh an rása a chriochnú.

Bhain mé an-sult as na ranganna a bhí ar siúl gach seachtain agus freisin ba dushlán pearsanta a bhí ann an méid a bhí foghlamtha agam sa rang a chur in úsáid le linn dom féin a bheith ag cleachtadh. Ba tasc mall agus dushlánacha a bhí ann ach bhí toradh mo chuid oibre le feiceáil gan mhoill! Ní raibh sé i gceist agam triathalon a dhéanamh mar cheap mé nach mbeinn ábalta é a dhéanamh mar nach raibh an snámh ró-mhaith agam. Ach le h-imeacht ama, thosaigh mé ag smaoineamh ar páirt a ghlacadh sa traithalon i mí Iúil agus de réir a chéile, le neart cleachtadh d’fheabhasaigh mo chuid snáimh. Fuair mé an an-chuid tacaíochta uaidh mo chuid comhghleacaithe agus traenálaithe snámha agus gan a gcuid tacaíochta ní bhéinn ábalta an snámh i Mulach Mór a chriochnú, gan caint ar snámh Ros Ceite!

Le linn dom aithne a chur ar dhaoine eile a bhí sa bhád céanna liom fein bhí deis agam mo chuid mothucháin a roinnt leo thuig mé nach raibh mé liom fein. Thuig mé go raibh daoine eile imníoch agus faitíoch maidir leis an uisce, mar a bhí mé féin agus thug sé sin misneach dom. Bhí deis againn ár gculaith fhliuch féin a fháil agus bhí ‘private fitting’ againn sa Yacht Club agus caithfidh mé a rá go raibh sé sin scranúil. Ní raibh aon smacht agam ar mo chorp féin agus mhothaigh mé go raibh mé ar an ngealach.

An chéad uair a chuaigh muid isteach san uisce bhí sé an-tábhachtach dul ar ais go dtí na rudaí bunúsacha- suí san uisce mar a bheadh tú ag suí ar do chathaoir le do chulaith fhliuch ort agus tú muiníneach nach mbeadh aon rud in ann tarlú diut. Bhí cúpla duine de na teagascóirí snámha a spreag muid dul i dtaithí ar an uisce arís sula dtosóidh muid ag snámh san uisce arís. Rinne sé seo an-mhaith domsa go pearsanta. Bhí an-fhaitíos orm agus tar-éis dom tacaíocht a fháil ón ngrúpa d’éirigh liom é a dhéanamh. Sa chéad cúpla ceacht is ag foghlaim faoi sábháilteacht agus cén chaoi a bheith ar ár suaimhneas a bhí muid, agus ní ag foghlaim conas snámh! Is cuimhin liom lá amháin a bhí an-ghaofar agus an-gharbh agus ní raibh uaim ach rith ar ais go dtí mo charr ach moladh dhúinn greim láimhe a fháil ar a chéile i líne dhíreach agus rith isteach sna tonnta le chéile. Sin é an uair a raibh a fhios agam go raibh scileanna nua foghlamtha agam, scileanna maireachtála agus seasmhachta agsu bhí mé imithe ar aghaidh go dtí leibhéal nua.

Gach uair a chuaigh muid amach ag snámh bhí duine ceaptha le haghaidh gach duine a chomhaireamh- chinntigh sé seo gur bhain muid ar fad amach ceann scríbe agus freisin bhí muid fein ar ár suimhneas. Ag tús na sraitheanna snámha moltar duit maor a thabhairt leat le cinntiú go mbeidh gach rud ina cheart.Caithfidh mé a rá gur chabhraigh an sraith snámha liom go mór. Ní raibh aon rud ar eolas agam faoi Triathlons agus mar sin tar-éis dom cúpla ceann de na sraitheanna seo a dhéanamh bhí tuairim éigin agam faoin méid a bheadh i gceist. Bhí sábháilteacht fíorthábhachtach- mhothaigh mé i bhfad níos sábháilte nuair a bhí a fhios agam go raibh daoine amuigh i gcanúnna le theacht i gcabhair orm dá mbeadh gá leis. Le linn an chéad rása bhí imní orm nach gcríochnaíonn an rása, is maith is cuimhin liom Ronan Mac Namara agus é istigh ina chanú in aice liom mo spreagadh ar aghaidh chun an rása a chriochnú. Ní raibh sé éasca agus ba mé an duine deireadh sa rása ach nuair a chuala mé an bualadh bos mór bhí a fhios agam go raibh éacht ollmhór bainte amach agam.

Rud amháin a bhí dúshlánach ná an t-amharc. Ní raibh mé ábalta feiceáil ró-mhaith agus de bhrí seo d’imigh mé den chúrsa cúpla uair agus bhí an rása níos faide agus níos deacra ach beidh mé ábalta níos mó oibre a dhéanamh ar sin i mbliana.Tá sé an-tábháchtach a bheith ag an lathair luath agus do chuid seodra ar fad a fhágáil sa bhaile, bíonn tuaillí velcro úsáideach mar go mbíonn orainn athrú amach an trunc cairr agus freisin bíonn buidéal uisce nó dhó ag teastáil!

Níl a fhios agam an mbeidh mé ar mo chompord san uisce riamh ach le neart cabhair, smachtú, moladh agus mo chuid smaointe agus mo shamhlaíocht a choinnéal faoi stiúir tá mé fós spreagtha feabhas a chur ar mo chiud snáimh agus sult a bhaint as mo chuid ama san uisce. Gach uair a bhím ag snámh mothaím go bhfuil rud fiúntach bainte amach agam nuair a shroichim an trá. Bíonn éacht bainte amach agam agus if fiú an traenáil agus an obair chrua ar fad! :-)

Lyndsey Dunne’s Channel Challenge

As the sea swimming season gets off to a cold start in the waters of Sligo Bay, Lynsey Dunne of Sligo Triathlon Club prepares herself for a challenging English Channel Swim this summer. Lynsey has always loved swimming in the sea, but having moved to Sligo and got involved in triathlon, she has taken the sport to a more serious level. This year she will swim from Dover in England to Calais in France on 1st July 2011. She attempts this swim as part of a two-person relay team where each challenger swims for two hours in rotation, covering in excess of 40km over 14-18 hours. This will be done without a wetsuit in waters ranging from 14 to 16 degrees Celsius, while navigating one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. In addition to the threat of tankers, boats and ferries, Lynsey will face jellyfish, currents, waves, sewage, hypothermia risks and sea-sickness!

So what drives Lynsey to undertake such a challenge?! “It is an amazing experience to swim uninterrupted in what can feel like an endless ocean,” says Lynsey. “Sea swimming is never boring, there is always some sort of marine life to look at and you always need to focus on where you are going and be aware of your surroundings. And there is no better feeling than when you have completed a swim and can look back and see where you’ve come from and the distance you’ve travelled.” In preparation for the big event training currently involves swimming six days a week, including one long swim of 15km (750 lengths of a pool) per week. “This is a bit daunting but having a goal in sight has helped keep me focused and motivated during these long swims”. For more information on Lynsey’s exciting challenge, check out www.ourchannelswim.com.

For anyone interested in dipping their toes into the world of sea swimming, its time to delve back into memories of childhood fun at Rosses Point beach and revisit the joy and exhilaration of swimming in the sea. Sea swim training sessions begin in early May for novices, intermediate and advanced swimmers with Sligo Triathlon Club. The Metalman Sea Swim series at Rosses Point takes place on Sunday May 22nd, Saturday 28th May, Saturday 4th June and Saturday 11th June. Distances will start at 750m and will progress to 1,000m and a final 1,500m.

The 2011 Warriors Run...

...sold out unbelievably quickly, this year transfers are allowed -a good few members missed the registration. There will likely be a few entries available over the coming months (only 700 out of 800 lined up to start last year). If you hear of any entries not being used or cannot make it yourself; stick a post on the training noticeboard.

4th Round of the TT

Next Round of the TT will take place tomorrow night in the usual place. Please remember if your not in the queue 15mins before your allocated time you may miss your spot or if you're one of the last - not get to go at all. We will have a look at the numbers who turn out and decide on the distance - but you can take it that it will be the usual 13km. Marshals are shown below, can you be there for 6:45pm. This is the last TT for a month, the start of the next 4 races commences on the 8th June, so make the effort and Good Luck!
