Christmas Day Splash - Midday, Rosses point, Sligo.

Christmas Splash 2011 was formally launched this morning on Ocean FM. Proceeds to go to Sligo Cancer Support Centre amongst others.

Declan Byrne from Sligo Tri Club is one of the organisers and we'd encourage club members to take part, this has been going on for decades and there's always a good turn out from the club and the Metalman Tri Club. Great fun and a nice way to get ready for christmas dinner.

Sunday Bike Training

The club bike training continues as usual this weather with a smaller than usual group gathering for the 9am start this morning. The training is geared to suit all levels and begins with a warm up loop of < 20k around Strandhill and back to town which means it is acessible to anyone trying the sport for the first time. Keep an eye on this blog or the club Facebook page for updates as Stephen is determined to field a strong crew of bikers next season!

Well done to all the club members who braved tough boggy conditions and an elite field in todays all Ireland cross country running c/ships. Finishing well in the senior men's category were Eamonn McAndrew, Damien McSharry, Ashley Henry, Conal Sexton, Rory Connor and Roy Kelly (apologies if your name is missing -as with any event; mail details/ times/ tales athletic derring do to press@sligotriathlon.ie). Congradulations also to the Sligo AC gang for hosting such a major event.

Second hand tri-gear

Just a quick reminder that we have a club buy and sell, (the link is buried on the left of this blog). Desi Foley has submitted some high end bike gear which may interest some of ye. If you have gear to sell on, or are looking for second hand kit mail buyandsell@sligotriathlon.ie to have it included.

The price and spec of triathlon gear has a huge range and there is a lot of stuff out there, a lot of it unecessary for the amateur athlete. If you are a newcomer to the sport it is well worth seeking advice on what to use before picking something up. Don't be afraid to get advice from one of the coaches or drop in to club sponsor Stephen at ChainDrivenCyles for a chat before investing in kit.

A lot of people have had trouble downlanding the race footage from last summer due to the size of the file so a reduced quality version can be viewed on the race homepage -there are also copies of the dvd doing the rounds (give Cecilia a shout at the next training).

The Women that Took the Autumn Challenge – Their Triathlon Success!

On Sunday, 06 Nov, Sligo Triathlon Club hosted a Women’s Try a Triathlon. The event was the culmination of a six week triathlon specific training program to encourage women’s participation in this exciting multi-discipline sport.

The training program consisted of weekly coached sessions in the three triathlon disciplines; swimming, cycling and running. The coached sessions were given by certified coaches from Sligo Triathlon club and provided thirty novice women with the necessary skills to complete the Try a Tri. During the training program the women also participated in additional workshops on transitions, nutrition and training, which were facilitated by experienced triathletes from the Sligo Triathlon Club.

The Try a Tri event gave the training group the opportunity to put all the hard training to the test with a 200m swim, followed by a 8.5 km cycle and a 3.5 km run. Twenty participants started the event with the swim, which consisted of an 8 length swim in the Sligo Regional Sports Complex. Within 5 minutes Dearbhaile Prior was the first competitor to exit the water making her way to the bike and followed in quick succession by Karen Flynn, Carmel Roberts and the rest of the participants. The ladies quickly embraced the challenging cycle from the Sports Complex to the Holy Well and back with several hills to contend with. Dearbhaile Prior was first back from the cycle with Sheila Devaney and Louise Ferrick hot on her heels after making up time on the bike. The ladies racked their bikes and were quickly off on the last leg of the event, which consisted of the 3.5 km run from the Sports Complex to the Race Course for a lap and then back to the Sports Complex. Within 13 minutes Sheila Devaney was first home taking first place in an overall time of 45 mins. Next in was Lorraine Cuffe , in a time of 46 min, who’s outstanding performance in the bike and run leg saw her come home in second place, with Dearbhaile Prior taking third place in a time of 47 min. One by one the remaining participants were welcomed home to rapturous applaud from the awaiting crowd. Congratulations must go to all the women who completed the event after putting in so much time and effort during the 6 week training program to achieve their personal goals of successfully completing the Try a Tri.

A special word of thanks to the coaches, workshop facilitators, the Try a Tri Committee, race marshals and Sligo Triathlon Club who all contributed to the successful training program and Try a Tri event. The support and funding from Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership is also recognised.
